As many of us in the industry know, the best clients make the best projects. This project exemplifies that adage. It all started with the client’s desire to replace her dated front walkway. After looking at the potential this front entrance had to offer, we knew this would be a truly special entryway. We were even able to salvage the bricks from the old walkway and repurpose them for the clients’ extraordinary garden area. Upon entering the walkway you are greeted by a circular entry boasting a pair of natural stone pillars capped with bluestone and adorned with bronze light fixtures. Stepping through the pillars the dramatic curvilinear walkway comes into view. With each bend of the walkway a new landscape scene unfolds. The landscape design grew out of the clients’ own love of plants and the merger of new and existing trees and shrubs became the underlying theme. This collaboration between old and new created this remarkable scene featuring a wide variety of textures, fragrance, foliage and flower colors all while maintaining the scale necessary for this location. As you find your way to the end of the walkway you are once again greeted by a circular court embraced by a circular natural stone seat wall. White calamint fills the circular court with a minty aroma and provides the necessary softness. Elegant natural stone steps lead you up to the bluestone porch at the foot of the front door, framed and covered by the stately portico. Taking a quick glance back down the walkway you see the lush plantings spilling out onto the hardscape evoking the naturalistic cottage composition the client was hoping for.
